A Sky Full of Stars

by Linda Williams Jackson

Hi! Have you ever felt hopeless before? Well, Rose feels hopeless about the situation down in Mississippi. Things aren’t getting any better for black people. She has chosen to stay in Mississippi instead of going up north, and things are hard

This book is actually a sequel to the book Midnight Without a Moon. (Click here to read my review of that book.)

The time is about a few months after Emmett Till was killed. The rights for black people in the south haven’t improved, and the characters in this story are trying to make a difference. The protests have started, however, there are some people in Rose’s class who would rather fight than protest peacefully. Rose joins one of the protests and her best friend, Hallelujah, gets a rock thrown at his face. He gets better, but people get scared. Rose also has some of her own conflicts going on. She hasn’t seen her father in years, and when she gets a chance to meet him, she’s scared that he won’t show up. Things are bleak, but Rose hopes she can turn them around.

Something that was hard for me was that even little kids were getting mistreated. When Hallelujah got the rock thrown at his face, it was really hard because he was just a kid.

I love how Rose was scared to go to the protest, but she did it anyway. She stood up for the rights of her people, even though she was scared. That’s what I think that true bravery is. I would hope that, if I was in the same situation, I would be able to do the same thing!

Will things get better in the south? Or will everything remain bleak and Rose have no hope for a better future? As I always say, read the book to find out!

A few helpful things I like to say about the books I read:

“Run and Get Mom” (how I describe the scariness factor – zero being not scary at all and five being majorly scary): 4

4 Ghosts.png

“Yucky-Lovey Stuff” (how I describe the romance factor – zero having no yucky-lovey parts in it and five having major yucky-lovey parts): 3

I give this book 5 wands.

This book was amazing! It taught me a thing or two about bravery and it was a great story! Standing up for the things you believe in is hard, especially when there is a danger factor involved. But Rose did it anyway. She is very brave!
