The Eye of Ra

By Ben Gartner

Hi! Have you ever moved or known someone who has moved? It can be hard because you’re losing your friends! That’s what happened to Sarah and John. However, they felt two completely different ways about it. Sarah was excited for the adventure. And while she was a little sad because she’d be moving away from her friends, she was happy to see what Maryland would be like. John, on the other hand, didn’t want to move away from Chicago. He had a best buddy named Roman who loved to play basketball with him and hang out, and he couldn’t imagine life being the same without him. However, all that changed one day when they went on a hike that John had been dreading.

John, Sarah, and their parents went on a hike up to the top of Crescent Vista. However, when they were about halfway there, Sarah and John came across an ancient cave. John was nervous and wanted to go back on the hike, but Sarah was excited, so she ran into the cave as her parents continued up the hill unknowingly. And John, being the little brother, was too scared to go without her, so he ran in and tried to convince her to come back. Sarah continued despite John’s warnings, and traced a mysterious marking.

Suddenly, there was a flash of bright light, and Sarah and John left the cave confused, back into… sand? What happened and where was Colorado? Sarah and John saw a boy walking towards them. His name was Zack. He kept questioning John about his clothing and style because he said he had never seen anything like it. And he kept mentioning ancient words. Soon, it hit! They were in ancient Egypt!

They walked back with Zack to his house, for they had been invited after mentioning that they admired the pyramid. When Zack’s parents asked where they were from, they told a lie and said they were from far away and that they had been separated from their parents at the sea. Zack’s parents, being kind as they were, invited the kids to stay with them for a while.

The next day, they went to work on the pyramid. John worked with Zack, and Sarah worked with Zack’s friends Ella and Rich. They encountered many things together like scorpians, spiders, and even a giant sandstorm! However, one question still remained on their minds. Would they ever return home and see their family again? Or would they be stuck in ancient Egypt forever? As I always say, read the book to find out!

A few helpful things I like to say about the books I read:

“Run and Get Mom” (how I describe the scariness factor – zero being not scary at all and five being majorly scary): 3

3 Ghosts.png

“Yucky-Lovey Stuff” (how I describe the romance factor – zero having no yucky-lovey parts in it and five having major yucky-lovey parts): 3

I give this book 4 ½ wands.

This book was awesome! It did take me a little while to get into it, but once I did, the book captivated me in a story of two siblings, trying to handle and save one world and, at the same time, get back to another.
