The Crooked Sixpence
By Jennifer Bell
Hi! I loved this book. It was amazing! I read this book because I thought it was going to be a lot like Harry Potter, but it turned out to be more science fiction than magic. It said in the book that Lundinor is a place that bends the laws of science. In Lundinor, there is such thing as uncommon objects – objects that a part of a person’s soul goes into when they die. An example of this would be bells that show you which direction that you should go in, needles that are mini security cameras, electric toilet brushes, and belts that can help you fly.
When a normal girl named Ivy discovers this extraordinary world, her life is changed forever. There are people called muckers and there are people called uncommoners. The muckers are normal, everyday people who do not know anything about the magical world that goes on beneath them. Uncommoners are the people who live in our normal world, but go to trade uncommon objects for other uncommon objects in Lundinor. It runs in the family if you’re an uncommoner, and it just so happens that Ivy’s mother and grandmother are uncommoners. So she realizes that she and her brother, Sev, are uncommoners, too.
But when she figures out that her grandmother had disappeared mysteriously on the twelfth night of January, 1969, she suspects something greater has happened that just running away. An evil group called The Dirge is after her grandma, Selvie. Her grandma has one of the five very powerful objects that overrule all other uncommon objects. The Dirge is hunting all five of the uncommon objects so that they can rise to power again.
Will she be able to find the powerful object in time, or will The Dirge find it first and use it to take over the world? As I always say, read the book to find out!
A few helpful things I like to say about the books I read:
“Run and Get Mom” (how I describe the scariness factor – zero being not scary at all and five being majorly scary): 3
“Yucky-Lovey Stuff” (how I describe the romance factor – zero having no yucky-lovey parts in it and five having major yucky-lovey parts): 0
I give this book 5 wands.
This is an interesting story about a girl who enters an unfamiliar land and tries to fight off an evil that’s after her grandmother. It will take all of her strength to save her family and save the world!
