The Hotel Between

By Sean Easley

Hi! Do you ever miss your mom or dad when they go away on a trip? Well, Cameron does. His dad and mom had left to go on this trip when Cameron was just a baby. But one day Cameron’s dad, Reinhart, came back and dropped him and his twin sister, Cassia, off at his grandmother’s house. Reinhart told Cameron’s grandmom, Oma, that his wife was dead and to take good care of the children. And then he just vanished!

So every day, Cameron would take care of Cassia because she had a leg problem and she was in a wheelchair. And his grandmother was always out of the house, so he had to take care of Cassia. But one particular day, Cameron was walking back from school when he stopped by a place called The Hotel Between. He stopped and tried to look through the glass when someone opened the door and bonked him on the nose. He felt like it was about to start bleeding, so he pinched it. The man said he was sorry and helped him up. Then, this boy in a very nice suit comes out and tells them that Cameron was not from the staff. He introduced himself to Cameron. He said his name was Nico. Nico played mind-games with Cameron and kept making his coin reappear in his pocket.

That night, Cameron started having dreams like he did every night – ones about the gigantic tree on the coin his dad gave him right before he left. Suddenly, Nico comes in. He asks him a strange question: “Why were you hanging around the Dallas Door?” Cameron doesn’t have an answer because he doesn’t know. And then Nico asks, “When were you last in the hotel?” and Cameron says, “Never.” Then Nico asked how he got the coin and Cameron said that his dad had given it to him. For some reason, he tells Nico that his dad is gone.

Later, Nico took Cameron to the hotel. He went through a door where they meet a man named Stripe. Stripe said that he knew Cameron’s dad and wants Cameron to find him. Nico kept Cameron a secret for as long as he could, but then the Maid Commander catches them. The Maid Commander is a very strict girl. She asks Cameron what his last name is. When he says “Jones,” the Maid Commander takes him to the person in charge of the hotel. He allows Cameron to work there for 11 days as payment for coming in without his own coin. Nico gets demoted.

What’s going to happen next? Will Cameron finally find his father? Will he uncover the mystery of what happened? Or will all be lost? As I always say, read the book to find out!

I recommend this book to readers who like action but also people you get to know. This story has twists and turns that you’ll never know where they end up going.

A few helpful things I like to say about the books I read:

“Run and Get Mom” (how I describe the scariness factor):
There were no big scary parts, just a few small ones. But if you get scared easily, then you might want to have your mom nearby.

“Yucky-Lovey Stuff” (how I describe the romance factor):
Zero. None. Nada.

I give this book 5 wands.
I really liked it! It was amazing how quickly I caught on. This book is best because of its twists and turns. It wouldn’t be the same without them!
